How to Convert PNG to JPG
- Add your PNG. Drag the file or click to browse. Read locally — nothing is uploaded.
- Choose a background colour. JPG has no transparency — any transparent area in the PNG must be filled with a solid colour. White, black, or light grey are common choices. Use the colour picker for a custom hex value.
- Adjust quality. Quality 80–85 gives a good balance of size and sharpness for most images. Lower for smaller files; higher for print or archiving.
- Download. Click Download JPG.
Handling Transparency When Converting to JPG
JPG does not support an alpha (transparency) channel. Any pixel that is partially or fully transparent in the PNG must be replaced with a solid colour. This tool composites the image over your chosen background colour before encoding.
If the transparent areas will appear on a white page (most documents and websites), choose white. If they appear on a dark background, choose black to avoid a white halo around the subject. If you are not sure, PNG (which keeps the transparency) is usually the better choice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does PNG to JPG reduce file size so much?
JPG uses lossy compression, meaning it permanently discards fine detail that the human eye barely notices. PNG stores every pixel exactly (lossless). A typical photo PNG can be 5–10× larger than the equivalent JPG. The quality slider controls how much detail JPG discards — quality 80 is usually invisible to the eye while cutting size by 70–80%.
What background colour should I choose?
White is the safest default — most documents, web pages, and apps display on a white background. Choose black if the image will appear on a dark page. For product photos and presentations, match the dominant background colour of the page where the image will be used.
Does the tool keep EXIF data?
No. Canvas-based conversion does not preserve EXIF metadata such as GPS coordinates, camera settings, or creation date. If you need to keep EXIF data, use a dedicated image-editing application.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser using the Canvas API. Your files never leave your device.
What happens to animated PNGs (APNG)?
Only the first frame is converted. Canvas cannot process animation — the result will be a still image of the first frame.
